Our 6 year old black lab-golden retriever mix, Makita, was diagnosed with a tumor in her nose last January. She had been having some nose bleeds and we spent nearly 2000 for CT scan etc to figure it out. The only recourse they gave us was a $4000, 2 week long, 4 hour away radiation therapy or Piroxicam. She hates the vet’s office and I don’t have the money for radiation therapy, especially since they weren’t positive it would work. I opted for the Piroxicam. The vet also suggested Prilosec (human drug) for the damage the Prednisone would cause. The vet suggested we may have 3 months with her. We’ve been giving her the pills daily for the past 9+ months. Since then she’s had few nose bleeds, but aside from being a bit tired she appeared generally ‘normal’ until about 2 weeks ago. We noticed a lump forming on the bridge of her nose, she started snoring and is very needy … not that I mind, she is our sweetie after all. In the past 2 weeks we’ve also had a couple minor nose bleeds, but last night was a gusher of epic proportions. It lasted over an hour and a half. We have a medicine drop that is supposed to help her form a clot, but it didn’t help. The small clots she formed she just sneezed out. We ended up sitting on the kitchen floor with her wanting to be as close as possible. We thought for sure it was the end. We literally had a large bowl under her face collecting blood. It was running as fast as a garden hose. I’d say we had half a cup to a cup in the bowl, not to mention the tons on the floor and on us. I don’t know what to do. I am only just now reading that perhaps a better diet (she currently eats Iams) would be good … at this point is it too late to try? And what do I try? She was so scared last night, breathing quickly and trying to mussel into my chest. It was heart-wrenching. I just want to do anything I can to help her. Suggestions?

I can suggest two things. Investigate neoplastene. It'a holistic remedy for tumors. If you search this forum there was a schnauzer named Emmit or Emmitt whose owner opted for the neoplastene over radia(ion and did well. Also get some of the homeopathic remedy phosphorus. It would be best to use the mini pellets which you could order from Washington Homeopathics. You can use the regular size, but for pets the mini size dissolves more quickly. When the nose bleed starts give one dose of 1 regular or 3 mini pills and repeat every 3 hours until bleweding slows then do 2-3 more doses 8 hours apart until bleeding has completely stopped. I don't know if you could do this as a preventative also. You would need to consult a homeopathic vet about that.

Can you afford a round or two of chemo therapy? You should tell your vet to search VIN [it's a message board for vets] there is an article there about a study done on 8 dogs with cancer in their noses. They gave them piroxicam followed by chemo therapy with doxorubricin and carboplatin alternating the two every 3 weeks. My dog is currently on piroxicam and getting the alternating chemo. She has Sinonasal Carcinoma and was sneezing and having some nose bleeds. The sneezing has almost completely stopped and she has had no nose bleeds.
